Lillie and Jojo

This is Lillie with her best doggy friend Jojo. Jojo is my next door neighbor's youngest Cocker Spaniel and Lillie's "live" chew toy. They play almost every day and sometimes get to play more than that.

Sir Paul McCartney

I am so excited! I got tickets to see Sir Paul McCartney! In my baby book my mother wrote down that the song "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles was the #1 song that week. She always thought she would have to explain to me who they were. Boy was she wrong. I found out about them in late grade school or early junior high. I became a huge fan. So now I get to see one of them in concert! This is a dream come true and I figure a once in a life time chance.

Coco's Request Screen Cast for 23 Things Kansas using Jing

I made a screen cast with my coworker Sandy Nuss who is also taking part in 23 Things Kansas. We chose to use Jing. After watching the demos we decided to give it a try. It wasn't really hard once we got the hang of it. For our project we decided to show how to make a suggestion to purchase an item for the library. Sandy played the library employee and I played the part of Coco the library patron. After some trial and error this is what we came up with. I hope you enjoy it!Coco's_Request__Starring_Sandy_and_Darla

23 Things Kansas Webinar

I just participated in the webinar and can hardly believe that 23 Things Kansas is coming to an end. We were given so many things to learn about it makes my head spin. I am one of these people who love to learn new things but easily gets intimidated. Everything was done is such a way that it wasn't hard to do.

I was always confused my cloud computing and really didn't know what it was but thanks to 23 Things Kansas I understand it! Blogging was not my thing but I'm starting to like it. Facebook and Twitter were things I was already doing. My computer crashed a few months ago and learning more about Flickr and Picasa prompted me to put my pictures on those sites. I was using Flickr and have since switched to mostly using Picasa. I find it more user friendly. Shelfari and Delicious were fun to learn about. I'm not sure how much I will personally use them but I now know what others are talking about. I haven't done the screen casting yet. I find that assignment really is scarry but tomorrow I'm going to bite the bullet and do it! Check back to see what I've done with it. I dabbled with Ning but they have now changed and are starting to charge you to use it.

The thing I enjoyed the best was slide sharing. I used Animoto and fell in love with it. I've made slide shows of my coworkers, my dog, of get togethers with friends, and flowers. I have posted a lot of them to my blog but have also sent them to friends. Since I'm having so much fun with it I now am thinking about paying for the "pro" package for it. I want to find more sites like it and try them out.

I hope everybody had as much fun with 23 Things Kansas as I did!

Lillie

I have had so much fun with Lillie. Today we went next door so she could play with the neighbor's dogs. I have got to get a video camera and tape them all playing. It really is entertaining. I am so happy to have learned about Animoto from 23 Things Kansas. I have made lots of "videos" from my pictures. Here is one of Lillie. When I first saw her I fell in love with her ears. We say they look a little like the flying nun.

Where has the time gone-23 Things Kansas

Wow, has this gone by fast! I don't know about the rest of you but I've had so much fun taking part in 23 Things Kansas. You have opened my eyes to things I didn't know about and showed me how to do things. I will have to say my favorite parts were slide sharing with Animoto and learning how to use Flickr. I will have to say that I am moving away from Flickr and going to Picasa. I think it is more user friendly. There is only one project that I haven't been able to do yet and that is #12's Screen casting. I plan on doing that as a group project and hope to get it done and posted in a day or two. Without taking part in this I would never have discovered these services or tried them. Thank you so much!!!

Wiki

I have to admit that editing a Wiki was a little scary but I took the bull by the horns and tried it. I went to the Wiki site for Def Leppard to see what I could add. I am a big Def Leppard fan. I will admit to owning all their recordings and then some. I have seen them almost 10 times over the years starting when they were the opening act for Billy Squire. I read through what was written for them and added to the listing for the cd Yeah!. Even though this was a cd of covers they did I really like it. I found out it wasn't that scary after all. Thanks for the boost in confidence!

Shelfari

I'm not one of these people who keep a list of books that they have read or ones that they want to read but I thought this site was kind of neat. I had fun going through and finding books that I have read and marked one that I'm reading now. This site looks helpful and I will recommend it to people who are looking for something like it but for right now I will work with it awhile and give it a chance. Who knows, maybe I'll get into keeping a list of "to reads" and "have read"!

Lillie's first birthday

On April 6 Lillie turned one year old! It is hard to believe that I got her just over six months ago. I sent her "foster mom" an email just to let her know how Lillie and I were doing. She was really happy to hear from me and said how she had wondered how Lillie was doing. She also told me that if I went to the ABRGA website I could see Lillie on the Love Stories section. Not only did I find Lillie's baby picture but I also found her siblings. I was so happy that she showed this to. She also told me she was "fostering" her sixth dog! It takes a very special person who can do this. If you are interested in viewing this web site here it is "http://www.abgra.org". This is a picture of Lillie just after I brought her home.

Slide sharing part 2

I had so much fun with the first one I made another. It is of the Northern California Coast.

It's Not What You Think...Slide sharing for 23 Things Kansas

Wow, this was really a fun week. I decided to use Animoto to do my slide show. I had so much fun doing this. My only problem was choosing the pictures to use and then the music. I finally decided to use the Halloween pictures taken of my coworkers. I hope you enjoy them. As you can see we are a fun bunch of people and we like to liven things up a bunch.
I have a friend who always sends me emails with a slide show from her vacations. She always told me it was very simple to do but I had my doubts. I will now be sending her and others my own little slide show videos.

Lillie, part dog part goat

Lillie will be turning one next week. She sure has been a lot of fun since I got her. Now, don't get me wrong, she is not perfect. Lillie wants to play at night when I want to sleep. I taught her how to play fetch a few months ago. She loves it so much that she has become obsessed about it. If I sit down to watch TV, talk on the phone, use the computer, or even eat there she is with one of her toys wanting me to throw it for her. Lillie can now catch it in the air which is a lot of fun to watch. Now, if only I can teach her how to sit again!
Now here comes the part about being part goat. Just this weekend she ate one of my memory cards for my camera. I sat down at the computer to download the pictures I had taken the night before off of one card and had placed the other card on the desk to download some pictures off of it next. I guess when I sat my camera down I knocked the card off of the desk and Lillie snatched it up. She had been chewing on a rawhide so I didn't think much about the noise she was making. I found most of the card but not all of it. I think she ate the rest of it. The next day she found a ink cartridge. It was one with black ink in it. Our carpet is off white. Good thing the cartridge was empty and she was caught before she did much damage.
You can say she keeps me busy!

23 Things Kansas-Video on the web

I love watching YouTube so this wasn't new to me. I will admit that I've never made a video myself to post so that might be in the future. My favorite videos to watch on YouTube are music videos and videos people have made from concerts. Just this past Monday night I went to the Bon Jovi concert with 2 of my co-workers and my next door neighbor. It was the first time for one of my co-workers and my neighbor to see him. I had gotten my other co-worker to go with me two years ago to see Bon Jovi so this was her second time and for me it was at least my seventh time to see him in concert. Bon Jovi is a lot of fun to see in concert and I must say he gets better every tour. He played for 3 hours straight the other night. I've said before that I am a concert junkie! Here is a video that I found on YouTube that someone has posted from that concert. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the concert!

IM part 2

I moved to my desk computer at work to try Meebo there since it was blocked on the the other computer. It worked!!! I found it very easy to use after staring at it for a few minutes in bewilderment. I really shouldn't be leery of trying anything like this. I signed on through my Facebook account but unfortunately none of my buddies were on line at this time. While I was at the other computer I did IM with buddy who was on Facebook. I will try to keep signed on to Meebo during the remainder of this week and next in case any of you would like to IM me!

Puppies

My next door neighbor lost one of her 3 dogs a couple of months ago. Monkey was her name and she had gotten very sick. I really felt sorry for my neighbor since I had just gone through the same thing this summer. Last month I get an email from her telling me about a dog she saw in the paper that was out at the local Humane Society. I quickly told her that if she wanted me to that I would go with her to see the puppy. We went that Saturday and saw the puppy. My neighbor quickly put in an application and a few days latter she had been approved. I again went with her the next weekend to take her two remaining dogs to meet the puppy. They all got along so we left with the new puppy in tow. His name is JoJo and he is just over a year old. Since this has happened I have taken my puppy over almost every day so they can play. JoJo is about 3 times bigger than Lillie but she doesn't let him get the best of her. They chase each other around the yard. When they get tired of that they will wrestle with each other. Lillie has actually flipped JoJo over and stood on him. Boy did he look surprised! Since it has been cold we will move in her house when we think the puppies have gotten worn out. Most of the time it's really been because we are cold. This is usually a mistake. JoJo and Lillie seem to get their second wing and will chase each other around the house and jump all over the furniture. It is amazing how laid back my neighbor is, she just laughs and tells me how entertaining she finds them. Now that spring is getting closer I predict that Lillie will be spending more and more time over there. My neighbor's backyard is bigger than mine so they have more room to run and play!

IM ;)

I never really did this until I got my Facebook account. Of course I've sent text messages to my cousins and a friend on my cell phone but it usually was just a short message. Since I've been on Facebook I've "IM" with a friend in Alaska, Ohio, Malaysia, and Texas. Even some friends just in town. My friend in Alaska was telling me about a bear that was on his deck. It was a lot of fun to get the first hand account of what it was doing right then and not just hearing about it later.
I tried to sign into Meebo but our library has it blocked. I will try it when I get home. I was able to sign into #23thingsks IRC channel and "chat" with wizzyrea. We talked basketball. I hope to IM with some of you soon!

Cloud Computing

I was a little intimidated with this idea. After watching the videos and reading all the information I'm not as scared. I decided to do a slide show on Google docs. I've sent a couple of invites to two of my 23 Things Kansas buddies and to another co-worker. I've decided to do a slide show of my co-workers and how much fun we have together. At first I had a little trouble figuring out how to set up the slide show but after just taking a couple of deep breaths I jumped right in and found out it wasn't so hard after all. So far I've added pictures of us at work, of us just getting together after hours, at a rock concert, and dressing up at work for Halloween. I can't wait to see what the others add!

Twitter

Wow, things are really moving along with 23 Things Kansas. I choose to use Twitter. I've been tweeting for over a year on my own. What I found I liked most about it was at first it was really easy to see "live" tweets. I really was amused at what people would say. If something really amused me or I liked what I read I would choose to follow them. I'm slowly finding some of my fellow 23 Things Kansas tweeters and will be added them to my list to follow. So far I've found angelalovesart, hbraum, smnuss. Twitter is just another way of staying in touch with others. I've enjoyed using it. Happy tweeting!

Delicious

Here is week six and I'm learning something new and fun. Today I started my own Delicious account. This was totally new to me. I found this site very helpful and I think this could be addicting to me!
Tagging wasn't a scary term for me but the idea of doing this was a little intimidating since I've never really down anything like this except for the favorites on my computer. Since I love music so much of course I had to bookmark my favorite band web sites along with my Facebook, Myspace and email accounts. I also added my local paper so I can keep up on the local news. The only thing is it seemed like I kept using the same tags. Oh well, when I play with it more I'm sure I'll find other sites and use more tags.
I also checked out Stumbleupon. I really was entertained by this site. This site would be a place to go when I'm looking for just some entertainment. I loved the stumble button. One thing I found when using it was a version of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean done by a man using an accordion and a suitcase for a drum. What a find!

Thanks Mom!!!

I love music and I have to thank my mother for that. Growing up mom always had the radio on in the car (she still does and now listens to a lot of XM radio) and at home played the stereo everyday. Mom likes soundtracks, musicals, and oldies. I can sing almost all the songs from Camelot, Sound of Music, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Cabaret. I know a lot of songs from the Mama's and the Papa's, Cher, The Four Seasons, and The Lettermen. Now you might think that my musical taste is like hers but it is most certainly not. I love the hairbands of the 80's and rock.

When I was in 7th grade mom let me go to my first concert. It was Shaun Cassidy. In 8th grade she let me go to my second concert which was Andy Gibb. It was my third concert the following year that did me (or her) in. Mom let me go see Queen on their News of the World tour. I was hooked after that. In high school I still only got to see about one concert a year. For my 18th birthday my best friend gave me tickets to see my favorite band, Def Leppard. They were fairly new and were an opening act for Billy Squire. I was not disappointed. For the next 10 years I went to concerts anytime I could. It was not unusual for me to go to a concert one night and then get up the next morning and buy tickets to another one. I've gone to AC/DC, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Tesla, Poison, Motley Crue, Ozzy, Ratt, and Deep Purple when they got back together. I went to so many that the place that sold tickets in town new me. They always gave me center stage and within the first six rows.

I still go to concerts when I can. In the last two years I've gotten some of my coworkers to go see AC/DC, Bon Jovi (they had such a good time last time we've gotten tickets to see him again), Cheap Trick, Poison, and Def Leppard. I also went and saw Billy Squire again at a casino. He never sounded so good. It was a treat since the place was small and intimate.

So mom, you may not like what I listen to but thank you for letting me develop my own taste and encouraging me to listen to all types.

Week 5 RSS and Feed Readers

Wow, this was totally new to me. I had no idea what a RSS was or even how it worked. After looking at the different choices we had I decided to go with Feed My Inbox. I'm one of those people who would set something like this up and after awhile forget to go back to read, (my Farmville friends would agree) so I thought Feed My Inbox was the one for me. I love music so I chose to subscribe to my favorite band's website along with Vh1, Billboard, and Variety. I also love Baby Blues comics so I chose that to mix things up. I like the idea of getting information in one spot instead of having to go to each site.

16

I'm having fun with this weeks photo sharing lesson. I think I could spend all day just looking at all the pictures that have been posted. I decided to share my two favorites. Of course this one and the one I have in another post. I like flowers and I've planted them every year in my garden. This is the one flower that I haven't tried but I'm going to try for the following reason.

40,000 Strong Jayhawks at Mass St after the Final

Wow, do I remember this night. You didn't need to be a student to enjoy the sweet victory that started the celebration. I didn't go downtown to celebrate but did watch the masses on the television. You could just feel the excitement. The next day we all stumbled in to work. Even though most of us did not get much sleep we were full of energy. This win dominated our conversations every where we went. I was in a store in Topeka a few days latter when a fellow fan spotted me in my National Championship shirt. This man and I stood and talked for a long time about our love of the game and the team. We both agreed that the "real" game had been between KU and North Carolina and with that win we had proven ourselves as National Champions. It was just icing on the cake for us to win the final game!

Webinars

Well, this is week three and the assignment is webinars. Now, I've participated in only a couple of live webinars before but this is the first time I viewed an archived session. The possibilities of what webinars have to offer is wonderful and it's so hard to choose which one to view first. How else can you participate in something and never have to travel. In this economy you really can't choose a better way to expand ones horizons. I chose 25 Technologies to Watch and How by Stephen Abram and it was originally done on 1-31-08. The title was a little misleading because Mr. Abram had 30 points to touch on. I did find it interesting since it has been two years since this webinar took place and boy have things changed in those 2 years. Mr. Abram talked about the importance of technology and how we need to grow with it. Things that were discussed ranged from podcasts, facebook, websites and itunes. A couple of things mentioned that I have never heard of were Spiralfrog and Pandora. I love music and was excited to look these up. I found Pandora and can't wait to try it out. When I looked up Spiralfrog I found it had shut down on 3-20-09. It shows how fast things come and go. One of the things Mr. Abram advised was to watch kids. They can figure out things so fast. This is so true!
I will continue to participate in webinars but nothing takes the place of a real person!

Not letting Ning get the best of me yet!

Over the weekend I've played with Ning. I'm not really impressed with this site since I keep getting the same choices over and over. I find it kind of funny that since most of these are fan/fun sites that there are a few that have to approve you just like a friend request on Facebook. I finally found something I was interested in by using Google. I tried to find it through all the "circles" but never did come across it. It makes me wonder what else I might be missing. I'm not a person who gives up easily but unless someone can tell me how to search on Ning I'm not going to spend to much time with it.

Ning

Since I've used Facebook before I decided to try my hand at Ning. I found it to be a little confusing. I did find some groups that looked interesting so I decided to sign up for them. I did find the 23 Things Kansas group only from the 23 Things Kansas website. I'm not giving up on this site yet. It may take some time but I'm going to figure it out!

Facebook

Hi All!
I've been on Facebook for a couple of years now and have had lots of fun with it. Not only have I been able to catch up with friends from school who I haven't seen but I've made some new ones. People laugh when I say I play the games that are offered on Facebook but you never know who you might meet. I've meet a person in Canada that shares my first name and a person in Ohio who not only shares a first name similar to mine but our last names are almost the same-one spelled ie and the other ei-and pronounced the same. We decided to become friends just for that. I've also meet a former Kansan who was living in Nebraska. I was one of the first people on Facebook that she told about her family moving back to Kansas. Boy, was she excited about that! I've also became friends with a people in Malaysia, Sweden, India, and England.
Even though I've never have come face to face with these friends I've found that you get attached to them. Whenever I've not been of Facebook for awhile I find I get messages asking if I'm okay. I find myself sending notes when I've noticed someone hasn't been on for awhile. Most the time they are like me and just hadn't had the time but every now and then they've been sick or had some other problems. It's always nice to know that out there in the world someone does notice and cares.
I've also had a relative (who I didn't know) find me on Facebook. I had to ask my mother if it was legit. I found out through her and my long lost relative that my grandfather and his grandmother had been very close. I also keep up with my cousins with Facebook. We live in the same town but all have very different schedules. Sometimes this is the only way we keep in touch.
Good luck and happy friend finding on Facebook to all of you!

Seeing the world for the first time

At the end of August I got a new puppy. We found each other right before her 6 month birthday. As you can imagine we are experiencing a lot of "firsts" together. Lillie had her first snow, it wasn't much and she thought it was okay. At Christmas she really had her first big snow, that she really loved. With drifts taller than she is Lillie would jump through them. When off of her leash she would run as fast as she could in the snow, leaping and jumping at the new flakes that were falling.
One day this week I went home for lunch and to take her for a walk. On our walk we came across a small tree full of birds. Lillie was mesmerized. She just stood there staring at them, never moving a muscle or even barking. You would have thought she had never seen them before but with the winter months there hadn't really been any around. We were finally able to continue our walk once the birds flew away. With spring coming and all the thunderstorms we get, I wonder if she will remember what thunder is.
I can't wait to see what else we get to "experience" together!

Week One Blogging

Hi! My name is Darla and this is my very first blog. I work at the Lawrence Public Library in Lawrence Kansas. The Lawrence Public Library is a fun place to work. With a wide range of users there is never a boring day to be had. I've been here for over 25 years and I still come across something new everyday. I was very excited to take the class 23 Things Kansas. It sounds like a very exciting thing to participate in. I heard there are over 500 of us doing this. Wow! That number just blows my mind. I was a little intimidated at the thought of doing my first blog. I was really surprised at how easy it was to do this.
